چکیده
Abstract Subglacial Lake Whillans lies below around 800 m of Antarctic ice and is isolated from fresh sources photosynthetic organic matter to sustain life. The diverse microbial ecosystems within the lake underlying sediments are therefore dependent on a combination relict, overridden, marine-derived mineral-derived energy. Here, we conduct experiments replicate subglacial erosion involving both gentle high-energy crushing subsequent addition anoxic water. We find that substantial quantities reduced species, including hydrogen, methane, acetate ammonium oxidised species such as hydrogen peroxide, sulfate carbon dioxide released. propose concomitant presence alongside high concentrations mineral surface radicals, suggests splitting water freshly abraded surfaces increases redox pairs rock-water reactions could provide mechanism augment energy available ecosystems.

Microbial Community Structure of Subglacial Lake Whillans, West Antarctica
Subglacial Lake Whillans (SLW) is located beneath ∼800 m of ice on the Whillans Ice Stream in West Antarctica and was sampled in January of 2013, providing the first opportunity to directly examine water and sediments from an Antarctic subglacial lake. To minimize the introduction of surface contaminants to SLW during its exploration, an access borehole was created using a microbiologically cle...
متن کاملMicrobial sulfur transformations in sediments from Subglacial Lake Whillans
Diverse microbial assemblages inhabit subglacial aquatic environments. While few of these environments have been sampled, data reveal that subglacial organisms gain energy for growth from reduced minerals containing nitrogen, iron, and sulfur. Here we investigate the role of microbially mediated sulfur transformations in sediments from Subglacial Lake Whillans (SLW), Antarctica, by examining ke...
متن کاملSubglacial Lake Whillans microbial biogeochemistry: a synthesis of current knowledge.
Liquid water occurs below glaciers and ice sheets globally, enabling the existence of an array of aquatic microbial ecosystems. In Antarctica, large subglacial lakes are present beneath hundreds to thousands of metres of ice, and scientific interest in exploring these environments has escalated over the past decade. After years of planning, the first team of scientists and engineers cleanly acc...
متن کاملSolute sources and geochemical processes in Subglacial Lake Whillans, West Antarctica
Subglacial Lake Whillans (SLW), West Antarctica, is an active component of the subglacial hydrological network located beneath 800 m of ice. The fill and drain behavior of SLW leads to long (years to decades) water residence times relative to those in mountain glacier systems. Here, we present the aqueous geochemistry of the SLW water column and pore waters from a 38-cm-long sediment core. Stab...
متن کاملLimnological conditions in Subglacial Lake Vostok, Antarctica
Subglacial Lake Vostok is located ,4 km beneath the surface of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and has been isolated from the atmosphere for .15 million yr. Concerns for environmental protection have prevented direct sampling of the lake water thus far. However, an ice core has been retrieved from above the lake in which the bottom ,85 m represents lake water that has accreted (i.e., frozen) to th...
